群（むれ）

Herd of Horses

なんとも美しい馬です。画面の群れで疾走する群馬の作品は、北米やアメリカ西部に生息するピント種といわれ、白と焦げ茶色がまだら模様のツートンカラーでとてもロマンチックです。背丈は少々小ぶりで、立髪もまた胴体と同様に、白であったり焦げ茶色であったり、まだら模様がユニークです。かつて先住民族がこのまだら模様を見た時、神の使者と崇めて大切に扱ったと言われています。このピント種もまた、スペインから越境してきた馬でもあるのです。目がグレー色の馬がほとんどですが、中にはブルーの目をもつ馬もいて、馬の美しさの極みだと思います。

How beautiful these horses are! They are called pinto horses which have a coat colour consisting of large patches of white and any other colour, and inhibit in North America and the western parts of the United States. Two horses galloping in the middle look romantic figures, having a patchy pattern of dark brown and white. They are fairly small with a unique mane of white or dark brown colour, or patchy pattern of various colours just like their bodies. In the past native Americans are said to have respected them, regarding them as divine messengers. Pinto horses were also brought in from Spain. Most of them have gray eyes; whereas some have blue eyes, which I think is the perfection of horse’s beauty.

カナダ・カルガリーの馬は夜間休む（眠る）とき、膨大な面積（３０数キロメートル四方）の牧場に放牧されるのです。それぞれ一頭ずつが思い思いの寝床をさがし求めます。それは草原であったり、時には森の中であったりで、馬は団体行動をとりません。それゆえ朝になっても牧舎に帰ることが出来ない馬もいるため、狩犬が馬をさがしに行き、牧舎まで連れ帰ってくるのです。この絵は２匹の犬が馬を牧舎まで“誘導”しているシーンを活写した作品です。

The horses bred in Calgary, Canada, graze in a huge area of around 250,000 acres when they sleep at night. Each horse has its own favorite place to sleep: some like grassland while others prefer forest. They do not tend to move around in a large group. Hence some horses do not return to their stables in the morning. On such occasions hunting dogs are roused to search for them, taking them back to the stables. This art work depicts the scene in which two dogs are “leading” the horses to the stable.
